Why Batavia Finally Has a Dispensary Worth Talking About
A cannabis learning-center post from Mrs. Green’s CANNAry — Genesee County’s first licensed dispensary.
For decades, Batavia had to drive
Before 2022, anyone in Genesee County looking for legal cannabis had to make a trip. Drive to Buffalo. Drive to Rochester. Pass strip-mall dispensaries on the way that felt more like urgent-care clinics than neighborhood shops. If you wanted thoughtful help choosing a strain or understanding dosing, good luck — most places were built for speed, not conversation.
That gap is why Mrs. Green’s CANNAry matters.
The founder’s story
Shelly Wolanske isn’t new to cannabis. In 2018 she co-founded Empire Hemp Co., one of Western New York’s first trusted CBD retailers — a business built on the same premise she’d bring to Mrs. Green’s later: educate, don’t upsell. When New York’s cannabis regulations in the early 2020s forced a choice between cultivating hemp and retailing adult-use cannabis, Shelly divested from Empire Hemp Co. to build something that could serve her community directly.
Mrs. Green’s opened on 204 E. Main Street — right in downtown Batavia, walking distance from the courthouse, the library, and half the local businesses that have been there for a generation. That wasn’t an accident. Shelly wanted a storefront that felt like Batavia, not like a franchise.
What makes it different
The phone rings to a real person. Shelly is on the floor most days. If you walk in with a specific question — about sleep, about pain, about what to buy your out-of-town guest — someone here will take the time to help you figure it out. No judgment about whether you’ve smoked before or not. No rushed upsell. Just honest answers.
The inventory matters too. Every product on the shelf comes from a licensed New York cultivator or processor, mandatory lab-tested for potency, pesticides, and contaminants. We carry local brands like Empire Cannabis alongside top-tier producers like Sapphire Farms, Leal, and Ayrloom — the names worth knowing if you’re new to NY’s legal market.
What it means for the GLOW region
Mrs. Green’s is the first licensed dispensary in Genesee County, and one of the few serving the full GLOW region (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming). We offer same-day delivery throughout the area for customers who can’t make the drive to Batavia. For a region that’s been underserved by most retail categories for years, having a legal cannabis shop that actually belongs here is a small but real shift.
