Edibles 101: Dosing, Timing, and What to Expect
A cannabis learning-center post from Mrs. Green’s CANNAry — Genesee County’s first licensed dispensary.
Why edibles hit differently
When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC goes directly from your lungs into your bloodstream — effects within minutes, peaking around 30 minutes, mostly gone in 2–3 hours. Edibles are different. THC has to travel through your digestive system and get processed by your liver, which converts it into a stronger compound called 11-hydroxy-THC. That’s why edibles feel more body-heavy and last much longer than inhaled cannabis.
Dosing for beginners
The New York starting dose we recommend is 2.5mg THC. Most packaged edibles in NY come in 5mg or 10mg increments — cut them if you need to. A full 10mg dose is plenty for someone with light tolerance and can feel overwhelming for a first-timer.
A simple dosing progression:
- First time: 2.5mg. Wait 2 hours before considering more.
- Second time: 5mg if 2.5mg was mild. Wait 2 hours.
- Experienced: 10–20mg depending on tolerance and what you’re after.
Timing — when will they kick in?
Typically 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether you’ve eaten recently (empty stomach = faster onset) and your metabolism. Beverages work faster than gummies — often 15–45 minutes — because liquids absorb more quickly. If you’re trying edibles for the first time, plan for the long haul: give yourself a free evening and stay home.
What the experience feels like
Onset is gentle — you’ll notice a shift in mood, maybe some lightness or relaxation. Peak effects hit around 2 hours in and can last another 2–4 hours. Some people find edibles much more body-heavy than flower or vapes. Hydrate, eat a light snack, and don’t stack a second dose because you “don’t feel anything yet” — that’s how people end up uncomfortable.
If you take too much
It’s uncomfortable but not dangerous. Drink water, snack on something with carbs, and wait it out somewhere comfortable. Black pepper or CBD is sometimes said to soften the edge — worth having on hand if you’re a new consumer.

Frequently asked
How much is too much for a beginner?
Anything above 5mg THC if you’ve never had edibles before. Start at 2.5mg, wait two full hours, and only increase if you feel nothing.
Why do edibles last longer than smoking?
Your liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC during digestion — a longer-acting and more potent compound. That’s why effects last 4–6+ hours vs. 2–3 for smoking.
What if I accidentally take too much?
Uncomfortable but not dangerous. Drink water, eat something, and find somewhere comfortable. Effects peak around 2 hours and taper off.
Are beverages better than gummies for first-timers?
Often yes — they’re lower-dose per serving (2–5mg) and kick in faster (15–45 min), so you can gauge effects more quickly.
